Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep regret over the death of civilians during an airstrike in Sokoto State. The airstrike, which took place on December 25, 2024, in Silame Local Government Area, was aimed at the Lakurawa terrorist group. Sadly, about 10 villagers in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities lost their lives, and others were injured.
The operation was part of efforts to destroy a logistics hub used by the terrorists. However, the airstrike accidentally caused civilian casualties.
Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, confirmed that the strike was based on reliable intelligence and surveillance. He acknowledged the civilian deaths and promised a full investigation.
“We regret the loss of civilian lives during this operation. Steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again,” he said.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima described the incident as a sad moment for Nigeria. He sent condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Sokoto State.
“I deeply sympathize with the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy. It is a painful moment for our nation, and we are truly sorry for this loss,” Shettima said.
He also prayed for strength for the grieving families and urged Nigerians to understand the challenges faced by the military in fighting terrorism.
The Vice President assured the public that the government will do more to protect civilians during military operations. Investigations are ongoing, and lessons will be learned to avoid such incidents in the future.
