The Kiambaa Church Massacre was one of the most tragic events during Kenya's 2007-08 post-election violence. On January 1, 2008, 35 people, including women and children, lost their lives in a horrific attack.
They had taken refuge inside a church in Kiambaa village, hoping it would be a safe place. Instead, attackers locked the church doors and set it on fire. Those who tried to escape were beaten or killed. The scene was terrifying, with screams filling the air as the flames consumed the building.
This massacre shocked the world and led to investigations by the International Criminal Court (ICC). William Ruto, now Kenya’s president, was among those accused of planning the violence. He denied the charges and was later cleared due to lack of evidence.
