The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has warned airport security officers to stop asking passengers for bribes or tips. This warning was given by FAAN's Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, during a meeting with heads of security agencies at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
Mrs. Kuku said that many passengers, the Minister of Aviation, and the Presidency have complained about this behavior. She described it as unpatriotic and harmful to Nigeria’s image. According to her, these actions make foreigners uncomfortable and discourage them from investing in Nigeria.
To solve this problem, FAAN has started a new program called "Operation AirClean." The aim is to stop harassment at security screening points and improve services for passengers. Mrs. Kuku said that more technology will be used to reduce manual checks by security officers.
She also said any officer caught asking for bribes will face serious punishment. To ensure this, undercover "mystery shoppers" with hidden cameras will monitor the activities of airport staff.
Representatives from different security agencies, including Immigration, Customs, NDLEA, and the Police, attended the meeting. They promised to make sure their officers act properly and give passengers better service.
FAAN also announced that mobile courts will be set up at airports. These courts will help punish officers caught misbehaving.
FAAN is working hard to make Nigerian airports safer and more welcoming for travelers.
