The Senate has announced that the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget will not be passed until January 31, 2025. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented the proposed budget on December 18, urging quick approval.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, explained that budget defence sessions with ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) will begin on January 7. "The final report on the budget will be ready by January 31," he said.
The budget, already approved for a second reading, will now undergo detailed scrutiny to ensure proper allocation and accountability. President Tinubu's proposed budget is Nigeria’s largest ever and focuses on critical areas like infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
While the delay may affect early implementation, lawmakers say the review is essential to align spending with national priorities.
