On Monday, during the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders launched a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This new initiative aims to reduce hunger and poverty globally by 2030. A Task Force will begin work in 2025, focusing on practical actions to achieve these goals.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who led the initiative, said the alliance already has support from over 80 countries and many organizations worldwide. The alliance will gather funds and share knowledge to apply proven solutions for reducing hunger and poverty.
This is not just about justice,” said President Lula. “It is also the key to building stronger societies and global peace.

President Lula highlighted Brazil’s success with its Zero Hunger and Bolsa FamÃlia programs, which greatly reduced poverty in his country between 2003 and 2010. These programs will serve as examples for the global alliance.
During Brazil’s G20 Presidency, discussions were held with other member countries to create a plan for how the alliance will operate.
President Lula pointed out a shocking fact: the world produces almost 6 billion tons of food every year, yet $2.4 trillion is spent on military expenses. He stressed that resources should be better used to end hunger and poverty.
The alliance will also support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the goal to end hunger by 2030. While the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and World Food Programme (WFP) have done important work, President Lula said this new alliance will speed up progress.
The alliance’s Task Force will focus on actions that bring real results. By working together, countries and organizations hope to create a future where hunger and poverty are no longer global issues.
