A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of $2.04 million and several properties linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele. This ruling closes an investigation into alleged financial misconduct during Emefiele’s time as CBN governor.
The seized assets include high-value properties in some of Nigeria’s top locations. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said these properties and funds were obtained through unlawful means. According to the EFCC, Emefiele used his position to acquire these assets in violation of Nigeria’s anti-corruption laws.
The EFCC launched an investigation after concerns arose about Emefiele’s financial actions. Evidence presented in court showed that he misused public funds to acquire personal assets. EFCC officials argued that the forfeiture was necessary to uphold accountability and protect public funds. The court agreed, ordering the final forfeiture of all assets in question.
With the final order in place, the government will take control of the seized funds and properties. These assets may be used for public projects or social programs, reinforcing the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
