Primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa State will remain closed for another week because of heavy flooding. The state government extended the resumption date to Monday, November 25, as many schools are still underwater or being used as shelters for displaced families.
Bayelsa schools were supposed to reopen on November 18, but the floodwater hasn’t receded in several areas. The Ministry of Education announced the extension to ensure the safety of students and staff.
The government has instructed schools to: Fumigate premises to prevent diseases,Cut grasses to make the environment clean, follow the official school calendar strictly.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Simon-Peter Okene, said the decision was necessary because many schools are still flooded.

The floods have displaced thousands of families in riverine areas like Biseni, Sampou, Adagbabiri, and parts of Yenagoa. Some residents are living on bridges or oil facilities as they wait for the water to recede.
The state government sympathized with those affected by the floods and assured residents that steps are being taken to restore normalcy.
The extra week gives schools time to prepare for a safe reopening. For now, residents hope the water levels go down soon.
