Hon. Uche Anya, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, explained that the house had been a place where kidnappers tortured people and demanded money. He mentioned a case from May 2024, where a victim was filmed with guns pointed at his head in the same house. After this, the police found the house, rescued the victim, and arrested most of the kidnappers. They also found a lot of weapons in the building.
Speaking to journalists, Anya said, “What you see here today is part of our fight against crime in Enugu. We are here to destroy a kidnappers’ den.” He stressed that the government is working hard to remove all signs of crime in the state and warned criminals that they will not be tolerated.
The demolition follows the law in Enugu State, which says any building used for kidnapping or violent crime must be destroyed. The house has been taken by the government and destroyed as required by law.
Anya also warned landlords to be careful about what happens on their properties. He said, “If you own a house in Enugu, we hold you responsible for any crime that happens in your property.” He made it clear that landlords cannot claim ignorance.
The government’s actions show that they are serious about keeping Enugu safe. By demolishing these criminal hideouts, they are sending a strong message and helping prevent future crimes.
