A 22-year-old man was stabbed while searching through bins on Garden Street, Missionlands, on Thursday morning. The man was looking for recyclables like plastic and cardboard when he got into an argument with another man, who is known to him.
The argument started after the suspect demanded they share the items found in the bin. Things quickly turned violent when the suspect broke a beer bottle and used it to attack the victim. The man was stabbed in the face and neck.
Witnesses called RUSA officers at 07:59. When they arrived, they found the injured man on the side of the road, bleeding from his wounds. He told the officers about the fight and described the suspect.
The suspect was caught a short time later on Palm Street. He was taken back to the scene, where the victim identified him. The suspect was then handed over to the Verulam SAPS.
This violent incident is a reminder of the dangers some people face while searching through bins for survival. What started as a disagreement over recyclables quickly turned into a serious act of violence.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, and the victim is being treated for his injuries.
