Federal Government Warns Employers: Pay Below N70,000 Minimum Wage Will go to Jail

The Federal Government of Nigeria has warned employers in the private sector. Any employer paying workers less than the new N70,000 minimum wage risks going to jail. This was said by Kachollom Daju, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, during the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies’ meeting in Lagos.

John Nyamali, Director of Employment and Wages, spoke on Daju’s behalf. He explained that the N70,000 minimum wage is now a law. “It is illegal for any employer to pay less than N70,000,” Nyamali said. The government wants to make sure that all Nigerian workers, whether in the public or private sector, earn at least N70,000. This amount is meant to help workers cope with the high cost of living.

The government is asking private employment agencies to ensure that all their contracts include this rule. No worker should earn less than N70,000, even after deductions. Any employer who pays less risks facing jail time.

Dr. Olufemi Ogunlowo, President of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies, responded to the government’s order. He asked if the N70,000 wage applies to the gross or net amount of pay. Ogunlowo also confirmed that employers are committed to paying the minimum wage and creating decent jobs.

The Federal Government is serious about this new law. Employers who do not pay their workers the minimum wage will face jail time. The government wants to ensure that every Nigerian worker is paid fairly. This law helps to protect workers from being underpaid.

Employers must now pay their workers at least N70,000 per month. This new law is in effect, and those who fail to comply will face punishment, including jail. The Federal Government is firm in ensuring that no worker in Nigeria earns less than this amount.
