Junius G. Groves was one of the wealthiest Black Americans in the early 1900s. His story is one of hard work, determination, and success. Born in 1859 in Green County, Kentucky, Groves started life as a slave. After the Civil War, he was freed and joined many other freed slaves in moving to Kansas in 1879. This movement was known as the “Great Exodus.”
In Kansas, Groves found work as a farmhand. He worked very hard and was noticed by his employer. Seeing his dedication, the employer offered Groves nine acres of land to farm on shares. This was a big opportunity for Groves, and he took it with both hands.
By 1884, Groves and his wife Matilda had saved enough money to buy 80 acres of land near Edwardsville, Kansas. They worked the land tirelessly, and their hard work paid off. Just four years later, they owned 2,000 acres of land. They moved from a small, one-room shanty to a large 22-room mansion, a sign of their growing success.
Groves became famous for growing potatoes. He was so successful that he produced 721,500 bushels of potatoes in one year, more than any other farmer at that time. This earned him the title “Potato King of the World.” His success in farming was not limited to potatoes; he also grew other crops and maintained several orchards.
Groves didn’t stop at farming. He opened a general store, which provided goods to the local community. He also invested in mining and banking, showing his skill as a businessman. These ventures helped him become even more successful and provided jobs and opportunities for others in the community.
Groves always credited his success to his family. His wife Matilda and their 12 children worked hard alongside him. The family’s dedication and teamwork were key to their achievements. Their combined efforts turned their farm into a thriving business and secured their place in history as one of the wealthiest Black families in the US.
