The Edo State Police Command has arrested a teenage boy, Arthur Angel Jr., for allegedly killing his 70-year-old father, Arthur Judah Angel, over money in Ugboha, Esan South East Local Government Area.
Arthur Judah Angel was an advocate against the death penalty and a human rights defender. He was killed on Sunday, July 14, 2024, and buried in a shallow grave behind his house.
Arthur Angel Sr. had been sentenced to death in 1986 for a crime he claimed he did not commit. Through his foundation, Life Wire International Foundation, he fought against the death penalty. He traveled to over 15 countries, using his art to speak out against it.
The Police Spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, July 17. He stated that the investigation revealed that Arthur Angel Jr. had threatened to kill his father before allegedly hitting him with a sledgehammer.
"On July 15, 2024, around 9:00 AM, the police received a complaint from Arthur Angel Jr. about a shallow grave found in their backyard," the statement read. "The police went to the scene, found the grave, and exhumed the body. It was Arthur Judah Angel, and he had a sharp injury on the back of his head. The body was taken to Uromi Hospital mortuary."
The community is in shock over the death of a man who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and human rights. The police are continuing their investigation to uncover all the details behind this tragic event.
