In the summer of 1853, George Crum was working as a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. One day, a customer ordered French-fried potatoes but complained that they were too thick and soft. Annoyed, Crum decided to teach the customer a lesson. He sliced the potatoes as thin as possible, fried them until they were crunchy, and added lots of salt .
